Wow, here I am commuting from one side of town to the other, and in the back of the taxi, on a dreary day in Bangkok, Thailand, I said to myself: “it’s time to listen to Pat Flynn.”
Pat Flynn, an entrepreneur most of you probably don’t know about, has an unbelievable and fiery podcast. The last couple times I’ve listened to his podcast I couldn’t believe the gold he was spewing. Here’s the one that could perhaps change your business FOREVER.
The reason why I’m making this blog and podcast is because examples are needed when deviating and going through a forest, which could have a lot of problems. Let’s break this down.
Go Niche/Find Your Specialty
He talked about going into a shoe store that had a variety of different shoes. Let’s take this an example. You go into a store that doesn’t specialize in what you’re looking for, “running shoes.” You want to go to a store that has specialists that know a lot about running shoes, right? Not a specialist that knows about basketball shoes only.
It’s like a dentist. If there’s a problem with your molars and you have horizontal impaction (basically your third molar being completely under your gums and heading in a perpendicular direction), you’re going to want to have an oral surgeon extract that tooth, rather than a general dentist, right?
This is what he’s talking about.
Become The Go-To Person in Your Space
Can you become the next go-to person in personal development? Probably not. That’s what Pat Flynn says. However, I beg to differ. Tony Robbins is a guy that only associates himself with upper/rich people. He doesn’t spend his days going through social media and talking to the average Joe. This is how YOU WIN! I’m telling you this because every YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter comment is for you to respond to and create a personal bond with that individual. Also, to talk to Tony Robbins, you would have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars.
There are other ways of going smaller. It’s like being a “definite purpose” coach. A coach that defines and help people with going after their definite-chief aim.
Being a meditation coach. Yes, Marisa Peer and others are probably up there, but do they talk to the average person? Do they have personal relationships with their followers online? How about MindValley Academy? Does Vishen respond to comments and stuff? Absolutely not. This is YOUR ADVANTAGE!
1st Advantage – Coming in Late
That’s right. Sure, Rachel English, who’s technically my competitor, came in years ago. Most literal thinkers would say, “it’s too late!” Actually, no. It’s not.
If we look at Vantanika, for example. She’s been in the fashion industry here in Thailand for 6 years and she’s a Thai billionaire because she graduated from university in London. Please, get it out of your head….IT’S NEVER TOO LATE.

Places – Where your target market exists.
In personal development, it’s sporadic. However, by looking at the majority of my students on YouTube, Instagram, podcast and Facebook, it comes down to Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, France, Israel, Japan, Taiwan, Ireland and Turkey.
Pretty broad, I know. But this is where my attention is at the moment.
People – influencers and trust of audience.
I went on Instagram and checked Rachel English and a few others. There’s one influencer, who lives in California, but she’s not consistent with pumping out contact. Moreover, she talks about slang, which is fine, but that’s a very sub-sub-sub niche market.
There was another girl that included gender and human rights in her posts, which isn’t really good because that could ultimately take out some of her business.
Rachel doesn’t have an Instagram, which is unbelievably SHOCKING, considering that she has 1 million YouTubers. This is where I can “own a hashtag” because the amount of tags I put on Instagram everyday.
Products – What are you competitors putting out?
IELTS, a test given to non-NES speakers, has the British Council. Yes, it’s super famous. Yeah, there are IELTS examiners all around BKK and even on all social media platforms, but is it personal? The problem with big corporations is just that…they’re big corporations. They don’t have ANY personal bonds or relationships with commenters and students in general. If someone ask about a tip for the IELTS exam, no one would respond.
Another IELTS website sells a lot of courses, but there aren’t any faces there? You don’t see a face ANYWHERE in terms of learning and who created the courses. Massive disadvantage, but now I understand what they’re selling and how they’re selling it.
Position in the space – under-serving?
When I first created my ESL podcast, I realized that with Gary Vee’s book Crushing it, I’ll be able create seasons on my podcast and make content that keeps bringing my students back. There isn’t a soul in the podcast realm who are teaching season by season at the moment. Also, English learning on podcasts wasn’t famous 5 years ago, or even three years ago. Asia and South America are being introduced to podcasts today, and because that’s happening, it’s a massive advantage. Why? Well, would you listen to a podcast that was uploaded yesterday or 5 years ago? Would you ask someone a question about a podcast 5 years ago, or one that was uploaded one week ago? Grammar, Pronunciation, Speaking Skills, Developing Confidence, Critical Thinking, Freewriting….no one is this dynamic in my field.
2nd Advantage – Better Connection
Connect with a higher percentage. Reply to tweets, Instagram messages, emails, etc.
